Knowing your UAN is very important as the entire process related to EPF services has been made online and user friendly through UAN. And in order to avail these EPF services such as withdrawal, checking EPF balance without the help of employer, you must know your UAN number. In this article, we will help you understand certain important aspects pertaining to UAN.
What is the UAN number?
UAN is 12 digit number that is allotted by the EPFO (Employee Provident Fund Organisation) for all employees contributing to EPF. The UAN of an employee remains same throughout his life irrespective of the number of job changes made by him. Every time an employee changes the job, he is allotted a new member identification number (ID) by the EPFO which is in turn linked to his UAN. At the time of changing the job, employee needs to communicate his UAN to the current employer. The employer will request the EPFO to generate a new member ID for the employee. The member ID will then be linked to the UAN of the employee.
How to know your UAN?
Option I : Through Employer
In the normal course, you can easily get your UAN from your employer allotted to him by the EPFO.Infact some employers print the UAN number in the salary slips too.
Option II : Through UAN Portal using PF number/member ID
In case you are not able to get the UAN from your employer, since you have left the job or any other reasons, you can obtain the UAN number through UAN portal also. You need to follow the below steps:
Step 1: Go the UAN Portal https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
Step 2: Click on the tab ‘Know your UAN Status’. The following page will appear.
Step 3: Select your state and EPFO office from dropdown menu. Fill your PF number/member ID. You can get the PF number/member ID from your salary slip. Also fill other details such as name, date of birth, mobile no, captcha code. Enter the tab ‘Get Authorization Pin’.
Step 4: You will receive a PIN at your mobile number. Enter the PIN number and click on “Validate OTP and get UAN” button.
Step 5: Your UAN number will be sent to your mobile number
3. How to activate your UAN?
In order to activate UAN, it is essential that you have your UAN and PF member id with you.
Steps To Activate the UAN
Visit epfindia.gov.in and then click on ‘For Employees’ under the “Our services” section.
Click on ‘Member UAN/Online services’ in the services section. You would reach the UAN portal.
In this page, click at ‘Activate your UAN’. This link is just below the ‘login’ column.
- Give your UAN, mobile number and PF member ID. Enter the captcha characters. Click at ‘Get authorization PIN’ button. You will receive the PIN to the given mobile number.
- Click at “I Agree” under the Disclaimer checkbox and enter the OTP that you receive in your mobile number in the space provided and click on “Validate OTP and Activate UAN”.
- Once the UAN is activated, the password to your account will be sent to your mobile number.
- This password can be changed once you log into the UAN portal with your UAN as id and with the password you have received to your mobile number.
